Richmond 1

Project Overview

On Tuesday June 2nd, 2015 Shaw Brothers Construction received an emergency call from the Maine Department of Transportation.  On Interstate 295 in Richmond an 84-inch culvert had deteriorated almost beyond recognition and closed a section of road.  On Friday June 5th Shaw Brothers was the successful bidder and was awarded the emergency work.  Shaw Brothers would plan to shut down I-295 on Sunday at noon for 36 hours but preliminary work would begin as soon as possible.  Two 80,000 pound excavators with 60-foot long-reach attachments combined with two 100,000 pound excavators and crews were mobilized immediately.   The excavators would transfer materiel up over the slope and into dump trucks staged above on the closed stretch of I-295.  This allowed Shaw Brothers to quickly open up the excavation enough to install the new pipe sections safely in a matter of hours on Sunday afternoon.  Backfilling continued through the night and the paving crew was on site Monday at 7am.  The day crews cleaned and stabilized the site, repaved, installed guardrail and striped the travel lane.  I-295 was reopened to traffic in record time.
